Building The Lightest AR Rifle | VIDEO

The AR was designed to be a lightweight rifle. So why does mine weigh as much as an M1 Garand? I set out to try and build the lightest AR I could while both avoiding the use of polymer or carbon fiber and maintaining all of the rifle’s functionality. I also opted to keep the maximum versatility in terms of mounting accessories and optics.

I weighed each part looking for the lightest and highest-quality components from dozens of manufacturers. The upper and lower receivers are made by MAG Tactical Systems from a proprietary magnesium alloy and weigh 35 percent less than standard aluminum receivers.

I opted for a mid-length gas system for reliability and recoil reduction with a Spike’s Tactical nitride-coated, mid-length gas tube and the VLTOR Low Profile Low Mass Set Screw Gas Block. I used a 14.5-inch, pencil-thin, fluted Bravo Company Manufacturing lightweight cold-hammer-forged barrel with M4 feed ramps and a 1-in-7-inch twist rate. I used the new BCM KMR 10-inch, free-floated handguard, which is made from a magnesium alloy that’s extremely lightweight. The KeyMod Rail System allows for multiple accessory attachment points as well.

The new Mission First Tactical Battlelink Minimalist Stock I selected was ideal. It is the lightest six-position tactical stock you can get. I weighed several pistol grips as well and found that the absolute lightest is the Magpul MOE-K Grip.

Internally, I used the Rubber City Armory Low Mass Competition Bolt Carrier Group, which is heavily skeletonized and shaves almost 25 percent off the weight of a standard bolt carrier group. It is also black nitride coated for superior corrosion and wear resistance. Finally, I installed a GI lower parts kit from DPMS and several small parts from V7 Weapon Systems, which makes 7075-T6 aluminum parts for the AR to replace steel parts.

On the range, I installed the fully adjustable Spike’s Tactical Billet Micro Front and Rear Sights, which are the lightest metal backup sights you can get, and the Bushnell TRS-25 HiRise red-dot sight, which features a 3-MOA dot and 11 brightness settings. The rifle performed exceptionally well with zero malfunctions, thanks to the gunsmiths at Sterling Arsenal, who completed the build.

The rifle alone, without sights or magazine, weighed 4.75 pounds. It is certainly possible to go lighter, but not by much without sacrificing some functionality or using extensive polymer or carbon fiber.

12 AR Magazines For Different Combat Scenarios

The magazine requirements for an AR weapon can change depending on the scenario to be encountered. Prone, long-range situations call for short magazines that allow an operator to hug the ground. A close-quarter combat scenario may require lots of ammo.

Here’s a look at specialty AR magazines to feed your machine.

Beta C-Mags

The 100-round Beta C-Mag dual-drum magazine has a reputation of reliability with the U.S. military. The AR magazine can unload 1,500 rounds per minute, and it adjusts to the weapon’s rate of fire. Constructed of thermoplastic material and non-corrosive metal alloys, the magazine weighs 2.2 pound in 5.56mm NATO and 9mm versions or 2.3 pounds for 7.62mm NATO models. The compact, twin-drum housing loads like a standard magazine, or you can use the Beta Personal Loader included with each magazine. The C-Mag meets or exceeds all applicable U.S. and NATO military specifications.

The AR was designed to be a lightweight rifle, so why does mine weigh as much as an M1 Garand?

Horrible weight gain seems to be contagious and something all of my ARs and I share. Deciding it was easier to put my AR on a diet than myself, I set out to try and build the lightest, custom AR I could while avoiding the use of polymer or carbon fiber (for the most part) and maintaining all of the rifle’s functionality. I also opted to keep the maximum versatility in terms of mounting accessories and optics.

Defeat the Darkness: 17 Lights & Lasers For 2014

Illumination is critical in a defensive or close-quarters scenario. Darkness hides both predators and prey, and identifying your target is crucial; it’s the difference between success and failure.

AR carbines equipped with Picatinny-style rails or KeyMod handguards allow operators to mount a tactical light that will illuminate the situation. Laser-equipped rifles make aiming effortless, especially in tight and close environments where traditional aiming is not always possible. The dot of a laser on a bad guy’s chest can also make a dire impression.

Some units combine both technologies, matching a tactical light with a laser for double performance. Stay in the light and use it to your advantage with this list of 17 lights & lasers for 2014.

Buttstocks From the Black Guns 2015 Buyer’s Guide

AR-platform rifles are easy to modify, allowing a shooter to configure his or her weapon to fit individual needs or specific scenarios. Swapping out a stock on a lower receiver is one of the easiest components to change on the rifle or carbine, and there are dozens of stock offerings on the market.

AR stock designs have come a long way since the original, old-school M16A2 fixed stock. If you’re a smaller-statured shooter or need to wear a lot of clothing/gear, consider a collapsible stock. A fixed stock might make sense if you’re shooting long range and have the time to settle in for a long shot and do not require extra maneuverability. Remember that the lower receiver is the part of the AR regulated and considered the firearm by federal law. When making modifications, makes sure they abide your state and local laws.

The latest polymer stocks and stock systems can up the 67-year-old AK-47’s game. Polymer stocks are impact resistant, durable and impervious to weather and chemicals. Modernized stock systems mean an AK’s stock can be configured to fit a wide variety of shooters’ statures.

Need something more traditional? Aftermarket wood stocks offer a high level of quality while remaining old-school in appearance. Choices in grips range from Eastern European military surplus to high-tech modern options.

AK upgrades like these means the AK does not have to be a one-size-fits-all gun, but rather one ready for charging into the 21st century.

Optics are vastly superior to iron sights until those optics malfunction or fail.

In the event of optic failure, backup iron sights (BUIS) offer a critical redundancy in the AR platform. Some BUIS can be deployed instantly. With a press of a button the sight flips up and locks into place, allowing an operator to continue with the mission and stay in the fight.

Scroll the gallery of iron sights above and check out more on the iron sight mentioned below.

A.R.M.S. #40 L-F/#40 L Combo

This front and rear sight pair offer a low profile in the folded position. The sights are spring loaded and held in place by a quick-release lever that also ensures the sights are not accidentally deployed. These sights lean slightly to the rear, so they fold back in the correct position if accidentally dropped. The rear sight has dual apertures for different engagement distances. (armsmounts.com; 508-584-7816)

AT Flip Up Combo

Flip Up Combo from American Tactical (AT) is an all-metal sight set for use on AR rifles. The rear sight has two apertures and is fully adjustable. The front sight of the system has an adjustable post. AT offers sets for ARs with flattop uppers and railed gas blocks as well as ARs with free-floating rails on the same plane as the upper. (americantactical.us; 800-290-0065)

Blackhawk Folding Sights

Delivering top performance with minimal bulk, the BlackHawk folding sight system delivers when it matters. With a push of a button the AR-15 folding rear sight springs up when needed. The front sight, which has an adjustable center post protected by side wings, springs into place just like the rear. Both are constructed with a polymer base and aluminum posts. (blackhawk.com; 800-379-1732)

Diamondhead D-45 Integrated Sighting System

The D-45 Integrated Sighting System features 45-degree-offset swing sights. All an operator needs to do is flip out the sights and roll the AR 45 degrees counter-clockwise. The rear sight stows under the eyepiece of a scope and features dual apertures with 0.5-MOA adjustments. The front sight accepts all standard A2 front sight posts. (diamondhead-usa.com; 413-739-6970)

GG&G 45 Degree Transition Sights

Engaging targets at close range is easier with GG&G’s 45 Degree Transition Sights. The front and rear combo set are offset at 45 degrees so all an operator does is cant the rifle or carbine to quickly get on target and continue firing. Made of 6061-T6 billet aluminum, the sights install on most Picatinny/Weaver rails. (gggaz.com; 800-380-2540)

Guntec Thin Profile BUIS Sight Set

Made of lightweight yet rugged T6 aluminum with steel inserts, the Guntec Thin Profile BUIS Sight Set features a push-button design that locks the sights to prevent them from folding down during use. This sight set installs on any flattop receiver and Picatinny rail and is designed for same-plane rail heights. (guntecusa.com; 480-478-4517)

Magpul MBUS Pro LR

PRI Flip Up Front Sight

The PRI Flip Up Front Sight fits 0.75-inch-bore-diameter barrels, is simple to install and bolts on with ease. With the PRI sight folded down, the shadow cast on an optic from a fixed sight is eliminated. The circle hood also helps increase target acquisition. The base is constructed of 4140 cast steel and the post is made of T6-6061 aluminum that has been hardcoat anodized black. (precisionreflex.com; 419-629-2603)

Feeding Frenzy: 12 of the Top 5.56mm AR Magazines Available

$
0
0

Sometimes overlooked, the lowly magazine can truly make or break a gun in the field. Bad magazines can introduce reliability problems, forcing you to clear malfunctions rather than put rounds on target. For AR-platform rifles, this is as true as it is for any other weapon system. Fortunately, there is a plethora of magazines on the market that combine reliability with a broad spectrum of enhancements. Modern AR magazines are made from a variety of materials, are available in a range of finishes, and can be had with all kinds of internals.

One of the most basic distinctions among AR magazines is the body material. Stainless steel, aluminum and polymer are all available, and each has its own benefits and limitations. Likewise, the follower and spring vary from magazine to magazine. While nearly all AR magazines use a follower that claims to be “tilt resistant,” not all are equally good. Some companies offer reliability enhancement kits that allow you to upgrade the floorplate, follower and spring in your existing magazines.

Magazine finishes rarely impact the reliability of the magazine, but an improperly applied finish can cause the magazine to hang in the well instead of dropping free. Also, certain colors or patterns may be more appropriate for your uses. A street cop, for example, is probably not going to use a non-standard gray or black color for uniform reasons. Likewise, a tactical unit may opt for a green or

Optics fail. That’s why you need to make sure your rifle has Plan B—backup sights for quick aiming. Sometimes called backup iron sights, or BUIS, these are go-to targeting aids for when your glass fails or become inoperable. Backup sights are also handy at close range, where a high-magnification optic is unusable.

BUIS allow an operator to stay in the fight, and they’re typically designed to be deployed in an instant if needed. Here are some great secondary options to help you stay in the fight.

Pennsylvania-based firearms accessories manufacturer Mission First Tactical is set to debut a new line of holsters at SHOT Show 2017 this January in Las Vegas. While details are scant at this point, the company is offering up a teaser of what to expect.

“The addition of a handgun holster line is a natural progression from our rifle/carbine accessories, since tactical operators also carry a backup handgun in addition to a rifle platform. We at MFT wanted to make certain that the holsters complimented our other accessories in design, material and functionality. Using the latest high-tech materials and production methods, our new holster line has all the fit, feel and performance one expects from MFT,” said Gordon Edelman, President of Mission First Tactical.

According to the press release:

The MFT team of experienced advisors and designers researched materials to develop a holster that would have capabilities unlike any other holster on the market. After evaluating multiple materials, MFT selected Boltaron for its uniform wall thickness, impact and scratch resistance, chemical and stretch/wear resistance. In addition, Boltaron is ten times more impact resistant than standard plastics, is fire retardant and is resistant to cracking in artic cold and deforming in extreme heat. The new material is only known to small custom shops, and is made using sophisticated laser capabilities to produce super clean edges with superior finishing techniques. Every holster undergoes hand assembly and finishing, resulting in a perfect combination of the latest technologies and hand-crafted attention to detail.

The OWB holsters will make their debut, with multiple models in the pipeline. The suggested retail price is $69.99.
