Beast Feeders: 16 Rugged and Reliable AR Magazines

$

0

Magazines are some of the most important — and abused — pieces of equipment we shooters use with our ARs. We dump them on cement, in mud. They fall freely from our magazine wells into sand. Sometimes we slam them into magazine wells cleanly, or jam feed lips against metal. This is just normal use. We treat AR magazines like they’re disposable, and yet we expect them to be reliable 100 percent of the time.

Luckily, manufacturers have stepped up to the plate to offer extremely durable, reliable AR magazines that will work every time you need them to, and we’ve rounded up some of the best available to keep your AR running in tip-top shape.

What’s your backup plan? Backup iron sights (BUIS) allow you to stay in the fight should your primary optic fail. Most backup sights today are designed to be deployed instantly via the press of a button, locking into position. Along with being a redundant sighting system in the event your glass fails, backup sights are also ideal for close-range engagements where a high-magnification optic might be a liability. So, without further ado, here are a few failsafe backup iron sights for AR shooters.

Mission First Tactical Releases the TP15MRS Drop-In Handguard

$

Mission First Tactical has unveiled its new Tekko Polymer AR-15 Carbine 7-inch Drop-in M-LOK Rail System, or TP15MRS for short.

Built for the secure mounting of tactical accessories like vertical grips, bipods, lights and lasers, the TP15MRS allows for maximum modularity between manufacturers of accessories and accessory rails thanks to the M-LOK system. Mounting is available at the 12, 3, 6 and 9:00 positions, giving the end user plenty of choices. Also included is a built-in sling QD mount for right-handed shooters.

The TP15MRS is made using Mission First Tactical’s proprietary heat and impact-resistant polymer. One of the things that stands out about the TP15MRS the fact that it can replace the plastic factory handguard in mere minutes with no gunsmithing necessary. That’s right: there’s no need to make any permanent alterations to your rifle, as it’s a drop-in, screw-less installation. The unit itself is held in place by the Delta ring and handguard cap.

“We created this handguard for an end user looking for a different foot print with enhanced features that’s price sensitive. It’s light, tough as nails and allows accessories to be quickly and easily added,” MFT’s Vice President David Edelman said in the press release.

Available in both black and scorched dark earth (tan), the TP15MRS comes with a lifetime warranty and is priced at $39.99.

Mission First Tactical's 15-Round MFT Mag For Colorado and New Jersey A dual look at Mission First Tactical's 15-Round MFT Mag For Colorado and New Jersey

On the heels of its 10-round restricted capacity magazine — designed for California, Colorado, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Hawaii, D.C. and Chicago — Mission First Tactical has now announced 15-round MFT magazines specific to Colorado and New Jersey.

The new 15-round MFT Polymer Magazine is based on the company’s bestselling 30-round mag and is designed to comply with Colorado and New Jersey firearm magazine regulations. The popularity of the MFT Mags, designed for the AR-15/M4 and capable of use with a variety of non-AR-15/M4 platforms, triggered an avalanche of customer requests for compliant magazines.

The 15-round capacity MFT Mag is made possible by an internal limiter. The bottom of the magazine is “permanently” sealed. On the floor plate, a red pin indicates the 15-round mag block.

The Colorado and New Jersey compliant MFT Mag is produced from the same military-grade reinforced polyamide from DuPont. The 15-round mag features a stipple texture and low profile front ribs for confident handling of magazines and easier extraction.

The floorplate flares to also aid in extraction while providing drop protection. It is compatible with tight double and triple magazine pouches.

An oversized bolt-catch notch, located in the rear of the magazine, allows for more bolt-catch clearance. A fully functional drain hole ensure that the magazine fully drains under adverse weather or shooting conditions.

The 5.56 NATO magazine features a long-life stainless steel spring and four-way, anti-tilt follower that ensure reliable and consistent feeding in any scenario.

The 15-round MFT mag has an MSRP of $16.99 and is available now.

For more information on the new MFT magazine and other products from Mission First Tactical, please visit MissionFirstTactical.com.

Optics fail. That’s why you need to make sure your rifle has Plan B—backup sights for quick aiming. Sometimes called backup iron sights, or BUIS, these are go-to targeting aids for when your glass fails or become inoperable. Backup sights are also handy at close range, where a high-magnification optic is unusable.

BUIS allow an operator to stay in the fight, and they’re typically designed to be deployed in an instant if needed. Here are some great secondary options to help you stay in the fight.

Mission First Tactical to Debut New Holster Line at SHOT Show 2017

Pennsylvania-based firearms accessories manufacturer Mission First Tactical is set to debut a new line of holsters at SHOT Show 2017 this January in Las Vegas. While details are scant at this point, the company is offering up a teaser of what to expect.

“The addition of a handgun holster line is a natural progression from our rifle/carbine accessories, since tactical operators also carry a backup handgun in addition to a rifle platform. We at MFT wanted to make certain that the holsters complimented our other accessories in design, material and functionality. Using the latest high-tech materials and production methods, our new holster line has all the fit, feel and performance one expects from MFT,” said Gordon Edelman, President of Mission First Tactical.

According to the press release:

The MFT team of experienced advisors and designers researched materials to develop a holster that would have capabilities unlike any other holster on the market. After evaluating multiple materials, MFT selected Boltaron for its uniform wall thickness, impact and scratch resistance, chemical and stretch/wear resistance. In addition, Boltaron is ten times more impact resistant than standard plastics, is fire retardant and is resistant to cracking in artic cold and deforming in extreme heat. The new material is only known to small custom shops, and is made using sophisticated laser capabilities to produce super clean edges with superior finishing techniques. Every holster undergoes hand assembly and finishing, resulting in a perfect combination of the latest technologies and hand-crafted attention to detail.

The OWB holsters will make their debut, with multiple models in the pipeline. The suggested retail price is $69.99.

Available in both black and scorched dark earth (tan), the TP15MRS comes with a lifetime warranty and is priced at $39.99.

Stag Arms has teamed up with Mission First Tactical (MFT) to produce its new Stag 15 Minimalist rifle.

Chambered in 5.56 NATO (.223), the Stag 15 Minimalist is built on a Mil-Spec forged, Type 3 hard coat anodized 7075 aluminum receiver; Mil-Spec single stage trigger; Mil-Spec manganese phosphate coated M16 BCG; and a 16-inch chrome-lined government profile barrel.

The MFT connection comes in with the rifle’s furniture and accessories. Completing the build is a MFT Battlelink Minimalist Mil-Spec stock that features an angled non-slip rubberized buttpad for fast presentations even while wearing body armor. The upper section of the stock sports an enhanced cheek weld, and a QD sling mounting point is positioned for ambidextrous use.

Meanwhile, the rifle features MFT’s TEKKO polymer AR15 carbine handguard, which allows for the mounting of Picatinny rails and other accessories. According to the presser, the single stage trigger is housed in a MFT E-VolV Enhanced Trigger Guard which features an oversized opening to allow easy trigger access even with gloves. In addition, the MFT Engage AR/15/M16 pistol grip has textured finger swells and a grooved backstrap. It also includes a water resistant storage compartment and a plug retention for one-handed storage access.

Rounding out the MFT accessories are a low profile, snag resistant MFT flip up rear sight and a 30-round MFT polymer magazine that features a stippled texture and low-profile front ribs, with a flared floor plate for positive extraction and handling.

“We are very excited to partner with Mission First Tactical and release our new Stag 15 Minimalist Series,” said Rick Bergen, Stag’s VP of sales. “Mission First Tactical has proven themselves as one of the premium MSR accessories providers in the industry, and their quality and durability is a superb fit for Stag Arms.”

“Partnering with Stag Arms on this project was a no brainer. Our best-in-class accessories with their innovative MSRs was a natural fusion, creating the durable, ultra-lightweight Stag 15 Minimalist Rifle. We are very happy with the end product and we think our customers will be, too,” MFT’s Vice President David Edelman said.

The Stag 15 Minimalist is available at a MSRP of $654.99. The Stag 15L Minimalist, the left-handed version, is priced at $689.99. The uppers and lowers are also sold separately at $269.99 and $229.99 respectively. A Stag 15 Minimalist rifle kit that comes with everything you need to build your own lower has a $529.99 price tag.

The 3-Prong Ported Muzzle Brake (PN: E2ARMD1) has 4-ports on top reducing muzzle blast and the 2-ports on the side direct gas horizontally, keeping recoil to a minimum. The front 3-prongs help direct the remaining gas and concussion forward from the shooter. Traditional muzzle brakes direct gas in one way, horizontally, and MFT’s new 3-prong ported muzzle brake takes it in a whole new direction. A 17PH4 stainless steel pre-hardened MIL-Spec crush washer is included. MSRP: $ 34.99.

Mission First Tactical 5-Direction Compensator

MFT’s 5-Direction Compensator (PN: E2ARMD2) disperses gas in five distinct directions. It aids in a wide gas flow to limit recoil and muzzle climb. There are no bottom slots to keep the dust down during low level shooting. The slim profile of the compensator matches the contour of the M4 style AR barrel, making for a clean, sleek transition. A 17PH4 stainless steel pre-hardened MIL-Spec crush washer is included. MSRP: $ 49.99.

Mission First Tactical 4-Prong Side Port Muzzle Brake/Compensator

The new hybrid is a 4-Prong Side Port Muzzlebrake /  Compensator (PN : E2ARMD3) that is designed to be a true hybrid. Gas is forced forward and away from the shooter, as well as being disbursed out of the sides. The first chamber helps direct gas up through the ports on top, which also aids with reducing muzzle climb. The gas exiting out of the sides aids in reducing recoil. The forward 4-prongs direct the concussion and remaining gas forward and away from the shooter, making shooters on your left and right a bit happier. A 17PH4 stainless steel pre-hardened MIL-Spec crush washer is included. MSRP: $ 69.99.

Mission First Tactical Tapered 3-Port Compensator

Designed to reduce recoil and muzzle climb, the Tapered 3-Port Compensator (PN : E2ARMD4) features two angled ports on top to direct gas up and backward to aid in muzzle climb and recoil reduction. Three horizontal ports on each side direct the gas out and away, aiding in recoil reduction and adequate gas disbursements. The slim profile makes for a clean transition to the end of the barrel and is a must for custom AR builds. MSRP: $99.99.

Mission First Tactical 3-Prong Flash Hider

The final new muzzle device from Mission First Tactical is the 3-Prong Flash Hider (PN : E2ARMD5). It projects gas in the proper directions to keep the flash footprint to a minimum. It also channels a small amount of gas through a port upward to help diminish muzzle climb. The length and inside texture of the flash hider helps keep the flash signature to a minimum for most 5.56 / .223 bullet grain weights providing for a flash-less shooting experience. A 17PH4 stainless steel pre-hardened MIL-Spec crush washer is included. MSRP: $ 74.99.

TESTED: The F4 Defense F4-15 Enhanced Battle Rifle

F4 Defense F4-15 Right F4 Defense F4-15 F4 Defense F4-15 Left

The F4 Defense F4-15 Enhanced Battle Rifle (EBR) is a thing of beauty.

There is a great fallacy in life that we all secretly know. Sure, we strive to be “above the fray” and don’t want to be known as the basic creatures that we really are. But the big fiction we cling to is that “looks don’t matter.” Now, granted, they are not the only determining factor in our ultimate opinion on things, but that first head snap is never based on anything other than looks.

While this is obviously a fact in human interaction, it goes much deeper than that. An area I see it in quite often is firearms. Simply put, people like good-looking guns. When you’re sitting around at a barbecue, you simply don’t brag about your ugly guns. I openly admit that I am susceptible to head-turning guns, and I almost snapped my neck recently when I looked back at a new rifle that has just been released. Here is an inappropriate whistle at the new EBR.

More Than Looks

Entering the AR market at this point in time takes some guts and confidence in your product. F4 Defense is a veteran-owned small-arms manufacturer with decades of military, engineering, design and competitive shooting experience. The company set out to build tactical firearms that perform at the highest level while maintaining unequaled aesthetics.

In other words, in an ocean of black guns, it takes some supermodel power to stand out, and that is exactly what the folks at F4 Defense have done. After two years of work, it was finally ready. Released in July of 2017, the F4-15 EBR is a perfect match of form and function. It is a stunning rifle with aesthetically pleasing lines and recesses that also serve to reduce its overall weight. Understand, however, that this is not simply skeletonizing a rifle to shave weight. All of the cuts are thought out to mix engineering and looks. It is hard to describe, but the F4-15 EBR has futuristic styling while maintaining a no-BS feel to its design.

F4 Defense F4-15 EBR Features

The rifle I received for testing was obviously eye-catching. The cuts on the billet-crafted receivers, for example, make it lighter than most forged receiver sets without sacrificing operational integrity. The gun is built by shooters, which is evident in the flared magazine well; ambidextrous, short-throw Battle Arms Development (BAD) safety selector; forward assist setscrew; adjustable trigger; and beveled, oversized trigger guard. The trigger is a HiperFire Competition unit that can be adjusted from 2.5 to 3.5 pounds for precision shooting.

One of the most notable features is the Adaptive Rail System (ARS) handguard. M-LOK or Picatinny rail? F4 Defense has solved the age-old question by offering both on one handguard. The patent-pending hybrid system is directly integrated into the extruded profile of the rail. Accessories of your choice can be attached directly to the rail, eliminating the need for adapter rails. The handguard is made from extruded 6061-T6 aluminum that is then hardcoat anodized.

The upper also sports an 18-inch, 416R stainless steel barrel with three-land polygonal rifling and an F4 QR muzzle brake. The barrel is paired with a mid-length gas system, a nickel-boron-coated bolt carrier group and an F4 Quick Reaction charging handle. Finally, for furniture, the F4-15 EBR uses a Mission First Tactical (MFT) Engage pistol grip and Battlelink Minimalist buttstock.

Sub-MOA Claims

To wring out the F4-15 EBR, I added a TruGlo 1-6x24mm Tru-Brite 30 Series scope. This has been a great optic for me and is high on the “more bang for the buck” scale. It offers clear glass, an illuminated reticle and plenty of magnification for my needs. This model also has a quick-zoom lever to make magnification adjustments fast and smooth. Most interesting to me, however, is the fact that the scope comes with two BDC turrets: one for .223/5.56 shooting and one for .308 rounds. Each one is calibrated to allow you to engage targets out to 800 yards with simple holds. All of this for only $270. It’s quite the steal.

Because of its Enhanced Battle Rifle moniker, I decided to run the gun in that capacity at the range. After zeroing in, I began to work across an urban scenario that I had assembled on the range with targets set anywhere from 25 yards out to 350 yards. My focus on all of the targets would be headshots. F4 Defense states that its guns possess sub-MOA accuracy, so that was my baseline. This is the brutal reality of a weapon in this capacity, especially in civilian and law enforcement worlds. “Minute of man” accuracy is simply unacceptable in some situations.

Drilling the F4 Defense F4-15 EBR

My son and ever-present shooting partner served as my spotter and called targets. I shot the F4-15 EBR off a support bag, but that was it. With the range set and clear, the next thing I heard was “Target 3, 275 yards, spotter up.” Like many people who run drills like this, once I establish my accuracy, speed becomes the next big factor. And I was quick on the trigger. The smooth press of the HiperFire trigger made it easy to get clean headshots. Except for a few rushed shots on my part in an attempt to set a land-speed record, the gun ran exceptionally well.

The F4-15 EBR’s solid performance continued as we began to run barricade drills and shoot from the support side. My son noticed that the ARS handguard had a bit of a bite to it. For those with less hearty hands, you will notice this as you run the gun. On the plus side, I’d like to give a quick shout-out to whoever first came up with the ambidextrous safety, because it is a nice feature when you are forced to switch hands. The added benefit of the BAD safety’s short throw is even better.

Show-Stopping Performance

After emptying the last magazine, I could easily say that the gun ran very well. In group testing, the rifle upheld F4’s claim of being a sub-MOA gun. Leading the pack was Hornady’s 75-grain Hornady TAP SBR ammo, which created a five-shot group measuring just 0.6 inches at 100 yards. Had I used a bipod and a rear sand sock, I’m sure the rifle would have produced even tighter groups, but I can’t complain about its performance as is!

The gun was built to tight tolerances, yet that didn’t give me any grief when running a variety of ammo. That said, the magazines seated so tightly in the mag well that empty mags wouldn’t fall free when released. This is a tiny nitpick and is actually more of a preference than anything. It’s also worth noting that I was using Magpul PMAGs, and perhaps other magazines might fall free. This caused a hiccup in my pace on a couple occasions as we mixed in emergency reloads. But, beyond that, I believe the gun is ready for prime time.

Worth The Price

The F4-15 Enhanced Battle Rifle is an exceptional gun. As I said at the beginning, I like good-looking weapons, and this one fits that bill while being made for serious duty. As F4 Defense puts it, the company is “unrelenting in its pursuit of innovative and game-changing weapon platforms for the military, law enforcement and civilian markets,” and this rifle is definitive proof of that.

It might be new, but F4 Defense is on the right track, delivering “proven solutions that drive innovation and improve performance.” I came away impressed by the F4-15 EBR, and I expect F4’s other 5.56mm and .308 models to keep turning heads. I look forward to watching this company grow.

Mission First Tactical Introduces the Extreme Duty Polymer Magazine

Extreme Duty Polymer Magazine Bottom Extreme Duty Polymer Magazine Profile Extreme Duty Polymer Magazine Top

Mission First Tactical (MFT) introduced its Extreme Duty Polymer Magazine for 5.56-chambered guns recently. Designed primarily for AR-15/M4 platforms, the magazine will function in other firearm types as well.

For some time, polymer magazines have dominated the AR-15 accessory market as the platform of choice. Because they are often more durable or affordable than aluminum or steel mags, numerous companies now offer seemingly limitless choices.

Likewise, Mission First Tactical is known for developing accessories geared toward the AR-15. The company manufactures some fo the more economically-priced AR-15 mags on the market today.

The Extreme Duty Polymer Magazines feature long-glass-fiber polymer construction for structural performance, strength and stiffness.

Additionally, that stiffness enables the magazine to maintain its integrity without adding weight, according to MFT.

First of all, the Extreme Duty Polymer Magazine is built to withstand deformation and polymer fatigue. Furthermore, the magazines enjoy increased durability, according to MFT.

The stainless steel magazine spring, which meets USGI specifications, is corrosion resistant. Also, the four-way, anti-tilt, self-lubricating follower keeps rounds aligned, preventing jambs.

For manual of arms, the magazines feature front and rear gripping surfaces designed to promote a positive grip. The flared floor plate aids in handling and extraction during the execution of reloads.

Most noteworthy, the magazine’s tool-less disassembly design should aid in field-stripping, cleaning or repairing magazines in the field.

Above all, the Mission First Tactical Extreme Duty Polymer Magazine comes with a full lifetime warranty. Finally, suggested retail is $12.99.

Mission First Tactical recently announced its latest rifle/carbine accessory, the MFT Decorated Extreme Duty 5.56 Polymer Magazine. Designed for the AR-15/M4 platform, the Decorated Extreme Duty mag also accommodates a wide range of non-AR/M4-style arms as well. But what really sets this magazine line apart is the images, both standard and custom.

MFT Decorated Extreme Duty Magazines

A unique process provides photographic quality images in a rugged chemical, scratch-resistant image. Mission First Tactical images offered include American Flag M1, Betsy Ross Flag, Blue Line American Flag 1, Gadsden Flag, Join or Die, Punisher Skull Splatter White and Distressed American Punisher Skull. Each week, MFT will offer a limited-edition design as a giveaway and a limited-edition sale through its social media channels.

The Decorated Extreme Duty mags utilize the newest material technology and processes. Next-generation long glass fiber polymer construction offers structural performance in strength, durability and stiffness. The stiffness allows the magazine to maintain its integrity without additional weight. As an additional benefit, it delivers top performance at elevated temperatures. The longer-length reinforcing fibers produce increased strength and prevents deformation and polymer fatigue.

Additionally, the Extreme Duty mag offers increased durability through a more efficient energy transfer between the polymer and the longer fiber filaments during an impact, according to MFT. A long-life USGI-spec stainless steel spring is corrosion resistant. The four-way, anti-tilt, self-lubricating follower keeps the rounds aligned. It also keeps mag feeding consistent and reliable, while virtually eliminating jambs.

The mags feature a ribbed gripping surface on the front and rear. Meanwhile, an oversized bolt catch provides enhanced reliability. The flared floor plate allows for an easier grip during loading. An easy marking paint dox matrix and tool-less disassembly rounds out the features.
